The talk was
overwhelmingly in favour of manual vote counting at a town hall meeting last
night in Thunder Bay.
Over sixty
people turned out for the event, hosted by City Councillor Lawrence Timko and
the mood was decidedly hostile towards the current electronic voting system.
Many different reasons for the opposition were given ranging from machines
taking jobs away from people, to computer hackers re-programing the machines
and changing election results. But the bottom line was no one trusts the
machines to get the vote count right.
A quick and
unofficial straw poll was taken at the meeting, with the vast majority voting
for a return to having votes counted by hand. Timko is expected to report back
to city council at Monday's meeting.
